Power Steering System Maintenance And Repairs

Power steering

If your vehicle has a hydraulic power steering system, it uses power steering fluid. Regular fluid replacement should be scheduled based upon the recommendations of the manufacturer or basic wear and tear, to help lubricate your system properly and keep it in good functioning order.

Many modern vehicles still use fluid in the steering systems for power assisted steering and if not properly maintained it can become difficult to steer your vehicle. Most power steering systems use specific fluids that contain detergents, corrosion inhibitors, and have good viscosity enhancers. The detergent keeps the system clean, which is very important. Changing the fluid regularly will help prevent wear from unwanted friction which causes excess heat in the system, corrosion and other issues.

As the additives in the fluid wear out, they can no longer provide the needed protection for the system components. Fluids can become contaminated with water, metal, plastic or just plain dirt. If the fluid is not changed regularly, sludge can build up from the deteriorated fluid, restricting the ability of the fluid to flow, which in turn, degrades the performance of your steering system.

If your power steering fluid leaks, it can decrease the effectiveness of the system and increase the effort needed to steer the vehicle. A leak will create a low fluid condition which can cause the pump to wear out prematurely or even to fail due to lack of lubrication. If you see any puddles under your vehicle it would be wise to bring it to One Stop Automotive for an inspection. When caught in time, we can save you money by repairing leaks before any serious damage occurs.
